Lone Star Classic 2020, one of the biggest junior national qualifiers in club volleyball, has been canceled due to COVID-19. Austin Sports Center, the tournament’s parent company, released an official statement on Wednesday:
“Unfortunately, after a recent update from the City of Dallas and the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center (KBHCCD), we are heartbroken to have to announce the cancellation of the 2020 [33rd Annual Mizuno Lone Star Classic National Qualifier] event. The cancellation of LSC also includes the cancellation of the SWBT (Southwest Boys Volleyball Tour) Finals and Tour Finals 18s events that were scheduled to be hosted in conjunction with the LSC.”
With the cancellation of the Big South Qualifier earlier this week also, there are now no remaining qualifiers left in the 2020 club volleyball season as a result of the pandemic. Therefore, not all bids were awarded and it’s still unclear how the spots would be accounted for, if at all. Assuming the National Championships do occur, we can expect a far smaller, unique tournament that will go down in club volleyball history.
According to USA Volleyball’s events page, the only major tournaments left for the 2020 club volleyball season are Junior National Championships:
- Girls Junior Nationals Championship (GJNC), June 25-July 4 in Dallas
- 18s GJNC, June 23-25 in Reno
- Boys Junior Nationals, June 26-July 4 in Reno
In addition, the AAU Volleyball Nationals have been pushed to July 14th.
Some regions are still holding competitions at a small-scale, applying strict social distancing measures such as banning spectators.
